When a person is in a relationship with someone that is in active addiction, you are constantly on egg shells. As their addiction progresses, you slowly begin to grieve the person you thought you knew, the life you thought you had, and what you thought you could trust. You watch the person you love become someone you don’t know. You try to fix, control, manage and change them, yet the more you try to cling to what you had, the more sad and lonely you feel. You lose the life you hoped for. Addiction takes away the person you love and impacts their ability to function in daily life. Sometimes, it takes their life.
